4 Effective Teeth Whitening Home Remedies

December 1, 2020

Teeth whitening is a procedure that involves lightening the shade of your teeth. Most people turn to teeth whitening when their teethlose their lustre. This can be attributed to several factors, including an eroded enamel, consuming foods that contain tannin, and buildup of plaque, among other factors.

There are two options when it comes to teeth whitening treatment: you can choose to go for in-office professional teeth whitening or go the natural way. This article has an in-depth look at some of the effective natural home remedies for whiter teeth.

Try Oil Pulling

This is a traditional Indian remedy that aims to improve oral hygiene by getting rid of the toxins in your body. Oil pulling involves swishing oil in your mouth to eliminate bacteria, which could cause plaque and consequent yellowing of your teeth. Sesame oil and sunflower oil were the most used traditionally, but you can pick any oil.

Most people prefer coconut oil for several reasons. First, its taste is pleasant, and it comes with lots of health benefits. It also has a high percentage of lauric acid, which is famous for its ability to kill bacteria and reduce inflammation.

According to studies, oil pulling on a daily basis reduces the number of harmful bacteria in the mouth besides preventing plaque buildup and gingivitis. Although there is no scientific proof for its whitening capabilities, this practice is safe, and you should give it a try. Many people have reported brighter and whiter teeth after oil pulling regularly.

How do you oil pull?

To oil pull:

  • Put a tablespoon of coconut oil in the mouth and swish it between your teeth and all over your mouth for at least 15 minutes
  • Spit out the coconut oil

The procedure can be done daily, seeing as it doesn’t expose the teeth to acids or any other ingredients that could erode your enamel.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is the commonly used ingredient in toothpaste, thanks to its natural whitening properties. Also, it is mildly abrasive, so it helps scrub away teeth stains. Additionally, this ingredient increases the alkalinity in your mouth, making it hard for harmful bacteria to grow. You shouldn’t expect results overnight, as this remedy progresses in stages.

Although there is no scientific research to prove that brushing your teeth with baking soda whitens them, studies indicate that toothpaste with baking soda as an ingredient significantly whiten your teeth. One study compared toothpastes containing baking soda and those without baking soda and found that the former was more effective at removing teeth stains than the latter.

How do you use baking soda to brush your teeth?

  • Pour one baking soda teaspoon into two water teaspoons and create a paste
  • Use the paste to brush your teeth for at least two minutes

Hydrogen Peroxide

Besides its natural bleaching properties, hydrogen peroxide is also known to kill harmful bacteria in the mouth. For years, people have used hydrogen peroxide for wound disinfection owing to its bacteria-killing properties. This ingredient is also not backed up by scientific evidence. However, one study indicated that using toothpaste with 1% hydrogen peroxide and baking soda significantly whitened teeth.

There are safety concerns when it comes to using hydrogen peroxide. Although diluted concentrations are safe, overuse or using strong concentrations could cause tooth sensitivity and gum irritation. Experts also say that taking high doses increases your risk of developing cancer.

There are different ways to use hydrogen peroxide: as a mouthwash before brushing or mixing it with baking soda and using the paste to brush your teeth.

Consuming Vegetables and Fruits

A diet of vegetables and fruits is good for both your oral and general body health. However, you should remember to continue practising good oral hygiene as this diet isn’t a substitute. Dentists recommend eating crunchy raw vegetables and fruits to help dislodge plaque during chewing. Pineapples and fruits are some of the fruits that could go a long way to whiten teeth.
