Electric toothbrushes have many benefits but which one is the right one for you?

We take a closer look at the electric toothbrush to really understand the benefits. First a little history lesson. The first toothbrush was invented back in 1498. Since then there have been many changes to the design and function of manual toothbrushes since the early days.

It wasn’t until the 1960’s that the electric toothbrush came on the market in North America but was quite heavy and bulky to use. Due to safety issues in regards to voltage use in bathrooms, in the 1990’s a new electric toothbrush came on the market that was approved for home use. Thus the ultrasonic toothbrush was born in 1992.

So what are the benefits to these ultrasonic toothbrushes?

Numerous studies conducted back in 2014 did in fact conclude that compared to the manual toothbrush, the electric toothbrush might have an slight edge for overall performance.  Not only does the toothbrush do the work for you, it also has many features which make brushing easier.

The most beneficial is the toothbrushes pressor indicator which lets you know when you are brushing too hard. This feature is helpful for those of us who simply brush too hard and may develop poor gum recession.

Another great feature, which is extremely helpful for those “too busy to brush” or even for the little ones in our home, the timer. A light indicator on most toothbrushes lets you know when you should switch sides and allows for a complete 2 minute brush time, because we’ve all been there when a quick brush just isn’t enough.

Electric toothbrushes allow for a better chance of achieving an overall cleaning at home and the chances of inflammation, reducing plaque and even decreasing hypersensitivity are all achieved. Not to mention, children and the elderly can also benefit from the use of electric toothbrushes. When dexterity becomes difficult for the elderly an electric toothbrush is the best option to help with brushing and ensuring a proper clean mouth.
