Partials

A partial denture is a removable set of replacement teeth that are attached to a plastic base that resembles gum tissue. Our dentists in central Calgary will recommend partial dentures to those who have one or more of their natural teeth remaining in the upper or lower jaw.

Partial dentures are similar to dental bridges in that they fill the gaps created by missing teeth. This keeps other teeth from shifting position, and the internal attachment design is intended to look like natural teeth.

Full Dentures

Full or complete dentures are designed for those who have lost all the natural teeth in either the upper or lower jaw or both. Traditional, or conventional, dentures are made after teeth have been extracted, and the gum tissue has healed. It can take two to three months before conventional dentures are ready to be placed.

Full dentures can also be made in advance of extractions and placed immediately after teeth have been removed. These immediate dentures are beneficial in that there is no waiting period without teeth during healing after extraction. However, there are some drawbacks to immediate full dentures:

  • Gums shrink during healing following extractions.
  • More adjustments are required for proper fit.
  • They are considered a temporary solution compared to conventional full dentures.
